False Bay Surf Lifesaving Club run a 4-to-6-week lifeguard training programme: theory and practical work covering all aspects of Surf Lifesaving, ending in a lifeguard exam.
We have a 100% pass rate, and candidates will receive an internationally recognised Lifesaving South Africa Lifeguard Award with a Level 2 First Aid Certificate at the end of it all.
Classes are at False Bay SLC Clubhouse, Sunrise Beach, Muizenberg every Saturday and Sunday at 9am to 12pm.
(far left of parking lot where flea market is on Sundays).
Classes are taught by an experienced lifeguard instructor from the Club, and this person also sits on the Club’s Committee.
Lifesaving Western Province requires that new lifeguard candidates are able to swim at a capable level in order to enter the exam.
There is a pre-requisite of being able to swim 400m in under 8 minutes in a pool, and we offer multiple opportunities to achieve this, as well as some basic stroke correction lessons and swim training.
Second weekend in October – Theory Classes start
Third weekend in October – Annual Pool Swim Test 1 for all lifeguards (new and current).
Last weekend in October – Annual re-test for current qualified lifeguards – covering most elements of your lifeguard exam, the retest is aimed at qualified lifeguards, and is a great learning opportunity to see what happens for your exam. You should come watch what the current lifeguards do.
Early January – We’ll set your exam dates with Lifesaving Western Province once the class is ready, and you’ll become a qualified lifeguard.
Please note: All new lifeguard classes start at 9am, with official training for all lifeguards (including the new lifeguards) starting at 11am to 1pm every Sunday morning.
We would love you to get involved with the physical training aspect of lifesaving – Training includes fun-based fitness activities and groupwork on the beach designed to get lifeguards up to a level where they can perform a rescue and believe in their abilities. We always train as a group, and make sure everyone is included.
Typically training is one hour of fitness followed by 1 hour of water work: swimming, craft training: malibu boards, rescue craft and surfski training.
We do not force anyone to do anything they don’t want to.
You need to bring the following items to all classes:
Swimwear (wetsuits optional), Towel, Sunblock, Change of warm clothing, Pen and book for notes, Snacks.
The Lifeguard Award class is FREE! as a further incentive for you to become a lifeguard!
There is a seasonal club membership fee of R650 for a single member, R1000 for two siblings.
The Lifeguard Award exam fee is R360.
Our lifeguards are involved in lifesaving for making friendships, lifesaving competitions, voluntary duty and professional lifeguard opportunities both locally and abroad.
